VARD wins hybrid offshore vessel deal
VARD has won a deal with Norwegian shipper Island Offshore for the design and build of a new hybrid ocean energy construction vessel (OECV).
Island Offshore operates in the oil & gas and renewables markets and runs a fleet of 19 vessels. The deal – with an option for two more – follows an earlier delivery in 2020/21 of three vessels built by VARD, including the Island Victory.

The 120m VARD 3 25 design allows for flexible configuration depending on operations. With an optimised hull, DP2 positioning and accommodation for 130 crew, the engine set is alternative-fuel ready.
It will be used for subsea operations such as inspection, maintenance and repair, pipe laying, infrastructure construction and installation, diving support and for ROV underwater inspection.
With preparations for a walk-to-work gangway and a heave-compensated offshore subsea crane of 250 tonnes, the vessel is also ready for commissioning, cable laying and repairs, trenching and survey.
VARD’s full scope also includes outfit along with SeaQ equipment such as energy storage systems, a shore connection, and bridge and communication system all delivered by Vard Electro.

The hull will be built at one of VARD’s shipyards in Romania, while the outfitting, commissioning and delivery will be from one of the shipyards in Norway. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered Q1 2027.
