Revealed: the world’s first uncrewed SAR vessel

Zelim has chosen Sea Machines’ remote control for its new Guardian class of fast search and rescue craft.

The 8.5 metre Guardian will use the SM300 remote command and control product, making it reportedly the world’s first uncrewed rescue vessel.

“When developing the world’s first remotely operated rescue vessel the command-and-control system’s reliability is absolutely critical, particularly given the lifesaving application,” said Zelim chief technology officer, Dough Lothian.

Sea Machines’ sales director, Europe, Frank Relou, added: “This project sends a clear signal to the industry that autonomous marine technology is rapidly gaining adoption and is in demand among commercial operators.”

The SM300 hardware integrates with the Guardian’s propulsion system and sensors, enabling vessel control while live streaming situational awareness and casualty detection whilst the software allows the vessel to follow pre-programmed routes or be operated in real time from a remote command centre.

Because the vessel can be operated without a crew it can be deployed in conditions deemed too hazardous for personnel.

Zelim’s SARBox detection solution assists the remote pilot by detecting and tracking casualties in the water, in any condition or light level. Once detected the remote pilot directs the craft towards the MOB and deploys its Swift rescue solution to recover the casualties.
