Olympic CSOV delivered on eve of Olympics
Ulstein Verft has delivered the first of two sister CSOVs to Norwegian fleet owner Olympic Subsea.
Olympic Boreas has been delivered on the eve of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which are officially due to open on July 26.
The vessel has been built to the TWIN X-STERN, which Ulstein says achieves a nimble and flexible manoeuvrability thanks to two main thrusters in the fore and two aft.
Because the vessel can travel in either direction, there is no need to constantly adjust in response to changing weather or waves, Ulstein says. It also has reliable dynamic positioning, which is essential for wind farm operations.
“The combination of thrusters and hull design results in lower energy consumption and reduced motions, and therefore, higher operability and cost,” says Ulstein.
The vessel has a hybrid power solution that incorporates a battery system and diesel generators operating at variable speeds. It is also prepared for methanol fuel and has reserved space for extra battery capacity, which Ulstein says would give it full electric operational capability.
Olympic Group CEO Stig Remøy said the two companies had cooperated on numerous projects.
“It will play an essential role in our future operations within offshore energy,” he said.
“In partnership with Olympic, we have developed and built an exceptional ship,” said Ulstein CEO Gunvor Ulstein.
The Ulstein SX222 vessels have a length of 89.6m and a beam of 19.2m, with accommodation for 126 people in 91 cabins. Ulstein has not said when the second sister vessel is expected.
