Department approves 9th US offshore wind farm
The Biden administration has approved the ninth offshore wind farm for the US as the country aims to hit its target of 30GW by 2030.
The target is unlikely to be hit, with less than half of the amount (13GW) so far approved, but the Department of the Interior is calling the approval ‘yet another step forward’ towards the goal.
The Atlantic Shores South offshore wind energy project will consist of two facilities, projects 1 and 2, in total estimated to have a power generation capacity of 2.8GW.
It will be installed about nine miles off the coast of New Jersey and will comprise up to 200 wind turbines and up to 10 offshore substations.
“The Biden-Harris administration is building momentum every day for our clean energy future, and today’s milestone is yet another step toward our ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030,” said secretary Deb Haaland. “Our clean energy future is now a reality.”
