Safety training to the wind energy sector service provider, Safety Technology, has opened a new RenewableUK and GWO accredited training facility in South Shields UK.

With training facilities already located in South Wales and Great Yarmouth, Safety Technology has now expanded its operations to the North East in response to the growing demand for skilled wind turbine technicians in the area.

By placing their facilities in the hub of offshore wind activity, Safety Technology is now equipped to deliver industry specific onshore and offshore safety training programmes to surrounding wind farm owners and operators.

Partnering with South Tyneside College, Safety Technology has installed a new training tower, built to meet the RenewableUK standards, on site at the Marine Safety Training Centre, along with a Hub Rescue Unit, Mock Nacelle and Fire Units.

From the new Renewable Centre of Excellence for Renewable Safety trainees will be able to encounter real life wind turbine rescue and evacuation scenarios, as well as experiencing the harsh and turbulent conditions of working offshore.

The facilities contain a 4m deep environmental pool (18m x 10m) used for offshore survival training, a state of the art training tower, indoor climbing room, fully equipped classrooms, and hub rescue and fire fighting units.

Managing director of Safety Technology, Bob Dickens said of the recent expansion: “We are very pleased to have formed this partnership with the College to establish such world class facilities in the North East. The location is very important to us given the planned future development in the region and the opportunity to service the huge growth in offshore renewable energy, the Government Catapult programme, and the potential for job creation in the supply chain.”

This new expansion now enables Safety Technology to offer the full suite of onshore and offshore RenewableUK and GWO Basic Safety Training Modules in one location.

The centre will operate as one stop shop for all onshore and offshore safety needs when working in the wind energy sector. Working in collaboration with South Tyneside College, Safety Technology has combined its experience and knowledge of the safety requirements of working at heights in the wind energy sector with the college’s expertise in marine safety to offer a full range of onshore and offshore safety courses.
